Third Grade Explorers ProgramWhat is the Explorers/Enrichment program?
Throughout the academic year, I work in partnership with the third grade teachers to provide a variety of experiences in language arts and mathematics designed to elicit high academic performance. Students who demonstrate potential in these activities receive advanced and enriched learning opportunities in language arts and/or mathematics under my guidance.
There are 3 steps in the Explorers Process: Step 1: I lead several whole class lessons on a selected unit or topic. These topics are areas identified by the third grade team and I during collaborative planning meetings. Step 2: The classroom teacher and I collaborate to assess the students' performance. We analyze the data collected to determine which students demonstrated characteristics of highly capable learners and would benefit from further enrichment. Step 3: I work with small groups of students to provide enrichment activities, offering opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate gifted behaviors. Performance products are kept and used in the nomination and referral process. Parents will receive information from me about the unit of study the third grade team and I planned when I begin my small group sessions. Do the small group services stay the same?
These groups are flexible as the units of study change. Some students may demonstrate more aptitude or interest in one subject than another.
Please note that participation in a small group experience does NOT mean that the student has been or will be identified for future AIG services. |
